The Palais Garnier is a masterpiece of theater architecture of the nineteenth century. Its construction was decided by Napoleon III in the context of major renovations of the capital led by Baron Haussmann. Its architect Charles Garnier was formed in Italy and the bountiful and lush Opera decor reflects his artistic taste. The fascinating ceiling of the great hall is the work of Mark Chagall.
